One picture runs behind every page on this site. It was chosen by looking at it; what the measurements decided was only whether it works.

An ebb is the tide going out. The picture is a tidal flat at low water: braided channels cut into wet sand, gold in a low sun. Those channels are the paths the water took on the way down — a line at every level it passed through — which is what a falling-price sale is, and it is also why the site is warm rather than grey.
Which photograph represents the brand was a DECISION, taken by looking at nine candidates
side by side. What was measured is only whether it works: tools/photo-stats.mjs
reports its blown and dark percentages, its chroma and its hue, and
tools/palette.mjs refuses to write the stylesheet unless every surface clears
it at both the dark and the bright end of the picture.
9 candidates, with the licence and author recorded at the moment each was downloaded rather than remembered afterwards. The description beside each is what the picture shows, written from looking at it.
